I've really always wanted a decanter's community anyway. I don't know why I didn't take initiative!

There used to be one, but it disappeared a while back.

I have to admit, though, I still don't understand imp thumb. I get imp finger. I tried to figure out how y'all close imps with your thumbs, and I nearly had a small disaster on my hands. ;)

Er, by used to be one, I mean "used to be a decanters' community." I'm overworked and clicking the wrong buttons!

Yeah, I seem to remember that. Well, now we have one again!

The way I do it?

Hold the imp between thumb and index finger of left hand. Place index finger of right hand (for me, it's sort of on the *side* of the top joint of my finger) on bottom of imp and ball of thump on top of imp. Press down until imp closes. :)

That's the way I nearly had a disaster! But I have very unbendy thumbs. Like, people think they're kind of freaky unbendy. No curve at all. So that's probably it.

I do the opposite - the base of the imp is on my thumb, and I close the caps with the side of my finger between the first and second joint. And then I cringe and get a pad of tissue paper and use it as a little cushion for my poor finger. ;)

I do it like moryssa said. I've tried it the way you do it, and it's a no-go. I just can't do it. I didn't even realize people did it the way you do! See, I'm learning things in this new comm already. :D

Last time I saw wicked_goddess how the Labbies do it since some of them do nothing but fill imps day in and day out, she said they have special trays they put the imps in, and a cork-like thing they use to press the lids down on the imps. They don't get imp thumb/imp index finger. Wish I could come up with a system like that!

I meant to say that time I saw her, I asked her how the Labbies do it...

Sorry, left out a few words there, so it made no sense. Oops!

I vote we all make wee videos of our imp-capping techniques and post them here. Who's in? :)

I had to go try it to see what I actually do, I'd never thought about it before!

I do step one here, but then I put my right thumb on the bottom of the imp and close with the tip of my right index finger. I must be comfy with that pinching motion, I guess. ^^; Doing it thumb-on-top feels backwards! XD

I tried that, with the tip of my finger, but it felt too ... unstable for me. Too easy to squeeze it and make it go flying. But at least I'm not the only thumb-on-bottom person anymore! ;)

I set my imps in ammo boxes (slightly smaller than you'd use to store them, so the fit is tighter) and then use a folded up napkin or paper towel on the outside joint of the knuckle and press with that to close them. Before I figured that out it was a LOT more painful. I still think of the Labbies every time I decant and send a little blessing to them. Especially when I'm labeling, which is my least favorite part -- I'm not that coordinated, sheesh.

(^--- is binkin on BPAL.org btw)

I used to get imp thumb and imp finger--I'd alternate between the two, depending on which one hurt less.

As of earlier this year, I stopped getting the bruising. I don't know if my fingers suddenly toughened up, or if it's because I've switched vial suppliers, but yeah. I used to only be able to decant maybe...6-10 bottles in a day before the pain stopped me (I used thick terry gloves a lot) but now I can just keep going until my hand starts to cramp up, or I have to do something else!

I use the thub on the base and close with the side of my index finger technique. However, I band-aid the affected area before I start because I KNOW I will have a sore spot there if I don't.

I did some decanting of some essential oils last night, and I tried the finger vs. thumb methods.

I usually use my thumb, so the first time I tried with my finger, things didn't go so well and I had a mini-mess on my fingers. However, after that, I didn't mess up one when using my index finger. But, I still feel like my thumb is stronger than my index finger, so I felt more confident when doing them the old thumb-way.
